Abstract
Brucellosis is a zoonosis with worldwide distribution. Since the first korean case of human brucellosis was reported in 2002, the incidence has been increasing. We enrolled the 11 cases of human brucellosis from 2003 to 2006 in Chungbuk province, and evaluated the epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment outcome of cases. All patients were cattle farmers, and six of them had history of direct contact with bovine brucellosis. All patients were identified by serologic test (Standard Tube Agglutination Test, STA), and none were identified via blood cultures. Fever and fatigue were the most common symptoms. Three patients had complications of organ infiltration, such as, arthritis, spondylitis, or epididymorchitis. Nine patients received combination regimens of antibiotics (doxycycline and rifampin or streptomycin) for more than 6 weeks, and all responded well to the regimens. Since the incidence of human brucellosis is increasing, primary physicians should be alerted regarding to the clinical manifestations and epidemiology of human brucellosis.
